Across Gouwzee Bay lies scenic Marken with a small and determined population. It was an isolated island in the Zuiderzee until 1957 when a causeway linked up with the mainland, effectively turning it into a museum-piece village. However, it still manages to exude a fishing-village vibe (well-used wooden shoes sit outside houses), and the car-free centre helps keep at least some of the crowds at bay.
